Getting Into Medical School

Getting into Medical school can be a difficult and overwhelming task because of the nature of competiveness as well and the tremendous amount of choices out there. How to best prepared yourself and getting together your application can be confusing at times. Here are the stepwise guides which will walk you through each of your college years in preparation for medical school application.

First and Second Year

Third year of College

Fourth year of College

First and Second Year

Be sure to have taken all the following required course at colleges.

• One year of BIOLOGY
• One year of PHYSICS
• One year of ENGLISH
• Two years of CHEMISTRY (through Organic Chemistry)

Applicants should also consider volunteering at a local hospital or clinic to gain practical experience in the health professions. In addition, a well-rounded sample of extra-curricular activities or work experiences, both related and unrelated to medicine, will help broaden an applicant's knowledge and development.

Third Year of College

Fall Semester

• Applicant s are encouraged to check with advisors and participate in prehealth activities
• Participating in paid/volunteer medically related activities as much as you can
• Start looking and reviewing potential medical school to apply to

o Medical schools in the U.S. and Canada
o International medical School
o Minorities in Medicine to get information for groups underrepresented in medicine

• Begin preparation for spring MCAT administration either by self study or participating in a commercial program…..more

Spring Semester

• Continue review of medical education options
• Take spring MCAT
• Explore the following Web sites:

o Texas Medical and Dental Schools Application Service (TMDSAS)

o American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine (AACOM)
o American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine Application Service (AACOMAS)

• Choose what schools to apply to


o List of Medical School in US/Canada
o List of International Medical School
o Medical school review by other application
o Facts about MCAT/GPA requirements and applicants profile break-down for medical schools
• Complete AMCAS application.

Fourth Year of College

Fall Semester


• Complete supplementary application materials for schools to which you've applied
• Interview at medical schools
• Continue review of medical education options
• Explore the following AAMC Web sites:

o Monetary Decisions for Medical Doctors online program
o Financial Aid Forms Required by Medical Schools searchable database

Spring Semester

• Make interim and final decisions about medical school choice
• Immediately notify medical schools that you will not be attending
• Ensure that all IRS forms are submitted as early as possible

Summer


• Prepare for medical school enrollment: purchase books and equipment and make appropriate living arrangements
• Relax and prepare for medical school
• Attend orientation programs and matriculate in medical school
